Helen Kish Dolls

I'm having real problems coming to a decision as to which of these dolls to purchase next. I have only seen photos of Helen's dolls and never held one or even seen one in real life.

L: 12"/30.5cm vinyl ... R: 12"/30.5cm BJD (Soom iMda 3.00 size)
There is something about each of them that I love, but if you own one I'd really like to hear your thoughts on the finish/quality of these dolls or perhaps you can share a link to a review.

L: 7.5"/19cm vinyl (FL RealFee size) ... R: 14"/35.5cm BJD (IH KID size)
Maybe a different perspective from you will help me bring one home soon . . . I hope so. :)

~oOo~

P.S. I found six more half price boxes at Knox Shopping Centre when we went to the cinema last week, so I have used one for the yellow, cream & white wool, and the other five for my fat quarter fabrics.

Top (which you cannot see) has all my shades of pink ~ pale to hot.
Then my red, burgundy and lilac.
Green, yellow, light tan.
Blue, aqua and grey.
Bottom is full of orange and black fabric ~ for Halloween!

  1. Believe it or not, I actually know the name of the company that produces these. I've seen a few Helen Kish dolls around online and they all look very adorable. I'm really loving that you're posting other doll lines on your blog lately. I'm enjoying seeing all these different dolls. As for opinion, afraid I can't help on that one as I don't own any of these dolls. Are the faces hand painted? Their face painting reminds me a little of the Tonner dolls.

    1. Hi Alasse,
HK dolls have been around for a long time now, but they never quite did it for me until I saw these. Yes, the faces are painted and until I actually see one IRL I'm not sure whether I will totally love the eyes. I know some dolls are vinyl, but others I'm not so sure about because they don't actually say what they are made of, I'm hoping someone will tell me. BTW Did you like any of the four in particular?

    2. Oooh of course, you know I'm gonna say the redhead! But I also love the look of that last girl with the platinum bob style hair. I think it's the whole styling of that doll.

Strange they don't say what material these dolls are made of. It's hard to tell these days. I was looking at some 16" fashion dolls today thinking they were vinyl and they were actually resin but there are also some that are vinyl too. So confusing!

    3. I thought you might say that. :)

I've been trying to work that out myself. I think some are all vinyl and others have a vinyl head with an mould injected body from a different substance. Looking at the blonde girl's shiny wrist, it reminded me of the Ruby Red doll I had (In Motion Girl Lia).

  2. Wish I could help but I didn't even know these existed. There's so many dolls out in the world, it's amazing!! Love that your collection is expanding to other dolls that I get to know because of you~
Hope you can find someone that owns one that can help you.

LOVE the last girl, she sure has style!

    1. Thanks Alejandra. I'm so pleased you are enjoying them all, I also like seeing other peoples collections, you never know what you'll discover.

I know there are others that read my blog but don't comment, so perhaps there is someone who can help me.

Yes, she sure does. But I'm not sure if she's resin or something else. Have to do more research.

  3. I honestly never heard of these dolls before, but I'd suggest the red headed one... from the photos you shared, she is the prettiest!

    1. Thanks Musume. Yes, she is pretty and my size too. :)

Helen Kish is an American doll maker who began sculpting and making porcelain dolls back in the mid 1970's and later moved to vinyl. Kish & Company was launched in 1991.

    2. Well, just order one this week, one next week and so on. That way, they will not all arrive on the same day!

    3. But think of the postage costs! Better to order together and hope like hell Mr. Posty comes when hubby is out. LOL!

  5. I have never heard of these dolls either :P But that's the awesome with following different people in the hobby, you get to know new, exciting things!
They're all really cute, though. I like the platinum blonde one with the beret, but I could see potential in all of them. Good luck buying your next doll!

    1. Thanks Nikki,
I guess when we first get into dolls we are drawn to a certain type or style, but the longer we stay in the hobby and the more contact we have with others with similar interests, we discover a whole new world of dolls.

I still love them all, but it looks like she's becoming a favourite. :)

  6. Hellou there! I had the same thought that Sam had - get them all! That would be just great! I hope that you can decide which one you want. The read head and the girl with the red beret is something I could choose.
    Good luck!
    Hugs!

    1. Hi Niina,
It would be nice to order them all together as it would save on postage, but it's a lot of money to find all at once. Still I could save and go without chocolate, in the hope they are all there when I have enough funds. :)

I definitely like the look of those two, but I don't like what their bodies are made of. It has been confirmed by a friend on DoA who owns some Kish BJD's that "the body material is like what is used on Ruby Red Gallery dolls, the heads are vinyl".

So I'm still tossing things around in the ol' brain.

    1. Hi Crystal,

It appears that sometimes the dolls we see in photos are not always what they seem. I have since found out they have vinyl heads and plastic bodies, which doesn't appeal to me at all, even though they look great in the photos.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  8. Hi Sandi ^_^ I have an older Helen Kish doll. She is a 16" vinyl 'Winter' from the Four Seasons range by White Balloon. She has black hair and a gorgeous long blue coat and white fur hat!I always liked the distinctive painted faces of Kish dolls, still do. My girl is in the loft, I think it may be time to go check her out... ^_^ xx

    1. Hi Carolyn,
It's been ages since we chatted. I've learnt a lot about these dolls thanks to my readers and although I love the faces, not all the bodies appeal to me. I do hope you share some photos of your Kish girl, I'd love to see her.

  9. Hi Xanadu, I have one of these Helen Kish dolls and have had a few of the 16 inch ones in the past. I have Prima Vera Olivia Blond although I removed her wig and changed it for a different one. If you look on my blog for Olivia you should find some photos of her or look on my dambuster01 flickr, she has an album. The doll is lovely but personally I think they are over priced. The head is hard vinyl and the body is hard plastic, as a result of them being made of two different materials sometimes there is a colour difference, not massive but it can be seen in some lights. The jointing isn't bad, no where as good as a BJD but it does add the ability to do some quite natural looking poses. They aren't able to sit with their legs together, the knees and upper thighs still tend to splay outwards like non jointed dolls do. I can email you some photos if you'd like me to, just let me know (maybe email me as I might not see if you reply here). I have some old photos of the 16 inch dolls too, I can send you those so you can have a look. As for quality, well as I said, I don't think they're worth the money, but they are attractive. My Olivia isn't handpainted by Helen Kish but I can't see that much difference between her and others that are handpainted, to be honest. In fact a friend of mine had a handpainted one and the only difference between hers and mine was the eyes, hers had the slightest difference to the depth. I added some shine to my girls eyes and she looks just as nice!! They are very light too, that came as quite a surprise to me. The outfits that they come in are nice though and well made.
I hope this helps a bit but if you need me to take any photos for you of my Olivia just give me a shout!
    Hugs Sharon x

    1. Hi Sharon,
I checked out your Olivia, she's lovely. :) Oh I agree with you about the price, but it seems to be a common thing for many of the American artist dolls. Now that I know about the plastic body, I think I will give those a miss, but maybe purchase one of the all vinyl ones instead. I appreciate the offer of more photos, but I don't think that will be necessary now. I'm not fussed about having one to pose, as I have plenty of BJD that I can do that with, I think just one Kish with a pretty face will do me nicely. Thanks for all the info.
      Big Hugs,
