When or where do you separate the two? Over the past year I have found myself drawn to and enjoying making dioramas for my dolls more and more. In fact I haven't felt a real urge to purchase a doll for quite some time, apart from Sergio & Nadia who were required for a project rather than a desired. And the two impulse purchases in Singapore.
The only dolls of what I call "play sized" who have been bringing me the most enjoyment are my kids: Holly, Primrose, Magnolia, Violetta and Marigold.
Looking at photos of them in the various rooms I've decorated, makes me wonder if these are the dolls I should be telling stories about.
Especially after making the new bar and finding my Integrity Toy dolls far too tall for it! When photographing the IT's in the past, I never noticed how extremely long their legs were compared to other 1:6 scale dolls (they are taller than Barbie & Neo Blythe).

Not to mention the fact my scaling was completely off, I don't know what got into me, I'm usually very good at mathematics. The bar ended up closer to 1:8 scale and suits my kids beautifully . . . it makes me wonder if perhaps the kids are magically influencing my calculations. What do you think? Can you imagine my five little cuties sitting in the White Panther Jazz Club?
By the look on her face, I don't think Holly is too impressed by these two under-age drinkers!
If you're like me, you go through phases in your love for dollies. I just completed a very long American Girl obsession, and now it's Cabbage Patch Kids. Next week it might be my old antiques or Barbie or something. LOL your kids are characters, regardless of whether they drink in their free time. I love dolls that are characters!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if everyone is the same RM, but I do find my love for particular dolls changes from time to time. I went from BJD to play dolls, then to fashion dolls and back to BJD's and play dolls again. I think what appeals to me about these Monst dolls is that they are almost a combination of all three. I mean they are cute, fashionable and very good at posing and that's aside from them being the perfect size for handling.
DeleteMaking the rooms for them is really what is capturing my creative spirit right now and since I have a shop front coming for Fleur & Ruban I'll be in my element for the next few weeks. :)

Hi X! Whatever you are doing to scratch that creative itch just keep it coming! Seeing these darling girls in the charming rooms is so inspirational! Thanks, too, for sharing the photo! As someone who knows so little about all the different doll lines, I found it fascinating to see the variances.

Oh you are welcome, even those of us who are aware of the different doll lines are happy to see comparison shots, I know it helps me when purchasing doll clothes/patterns if I know the sizes.

Oh, dioramas are a one-way-trip--I agree! I loved the rooms that created, and your dolls look so good inside them. Everything keeps to the scale perfectly, and it even has that mood that you somehow manage to get and transfer. Love them!
ReplyDeleteThank you Musume. The room box is one of my better buys, and I've really enjoyed creating all the different rooms. Having the interchangeable walls has been a real blessing as far as saving space is concerned. The furniture on the other hand has created a storage nightmare, but we'll get by.

I love your dioramas, and the small scale dolls are perfect for them. Holly seems to think "Who let them in"?. But apart from the fact that the small dioramas don't take up such a lot of space and allow for more rooms, it's easier to tell stories with the small scale dolls, don't you think?. They just fit better into one picture. You did a great job with the interior design.

I think I like the uncomplicated make-believe stories you can tell with these dolls in particular, where as the fashion dolls need to have a story more closely related to real life. I'm so pleased you like the interiors of the rooms.

I absolutely adore your dioramas, each and every one! Your girls seem to enjoy them too, and now they will have new club for themselves :). You can already see the excitement on their faces (beside Holly, that is) :D.

I'm sorry that your bar scene didn't work out how you wanted it, but your girls look happy there, even if the one with the purple hair looks like she drank a little too much. XD You know that I've moved away from Barbie to Rainbow High, and I also want to "play" with my 11cm dolls, once I get my room reorganized. For me, sewing and knitting and crafting dioramas and things are just part of my doll hobby, even though I also sew and knit things for us "big people" too.
ReplyDeleteYes, I saw that Barb. Sometimes mistakes happen for a reason and I guess these dolls will be telling a different story to the one I had in mind, but I think it will be fun. Hahaha! Violetta rather enjoys a glowing green, rich and creamy, delightfully mint chocolate Grasshopper.
DeleteI can see why you would, those Rainbow High dolls are really cute and they have heaps of personality too. Up until this year I thought that, but it seems lately the dioramas are contributing a much bigger part to my enjoyment.

Your dioramas are absolutely stunning, each photo tells a story. I really enjoy looking at photos with dioramas and dolls. In my collection, I have various dolls, but I have the most Barbie dolls. Recently, I realized that little Evi dolls go wonderfully with Barbie dioramas. They are like Barbie's little sisters in my stories. I also love MiniFee Fairyland dolls, although they are much larger than Barbie dolls. I have furniture, accessories, and locations for Barbie and Evi Love, but for MiniFee, all these items are small. So, over time, I need to create things for 1/4 scale dolls.
ReplyDeleteThank you Inesa. I do too. I also have a MiniFee. I fear the 1:4 scale doll diorama would take up too much space, which is something I have very little of, but backdrops work well with that size perfectly and they can be rolled up for storage. 😉

Thank you Niina. I have often admired doll houses and dioramas belonging to others and wished I had the room to have several doll houses of my own. It wasn't until I found this 1:6 scale room box that I realised I could have it all in a single space. Having the walls interchangeable is blessing and they are so easy to store vertically between my desk and the light table where the room box sits on top.
