Time and time again, I jump in without thinking and that's exactly what I did when I saw the Beacon Hill house. I never seem to learn and you'd think at my age I would certainly know better! Well I downloaded the schematics for the house . . . low and behold this gal was in shock!! There are literally hundreds of pieces that need to be put together, it will take hubby and I years to finish it . . . so don't hold your breath on getting updates on this house any day soon.
Anyway, this was not going to stop me from having a 1:12 scale dollhouse that I could almost immediately decorate, and without the tedious job of becoming a construction worker. So I bought this one, which measures 75cm (29.5") high x 71cm (28") wide x 46cm (18") deep.
Yes, it's a kiddies dollhouse, but it's not going to stay looking like this. I have decided that I'd like to paint the outside (colours yet to be decided) and maybe do something different with the roof, maybe with corrugated metal or terracotta tiles like they do in Australia.
The interior decoration that comes with the kit is more suited for a child, so I certainly shan't be using that either. I plan on doing an elegant black and white interior, with just a hint of coloured accents, much like you can see here in this updated Australian Federation house.

I jump into crafting projects without looking at details quite often myself, Xanadu. Generally mine involve sewing or knitting, though. Is that the Melissa and Doug dollhouse. I look forward to seeing what you are going to do with it.

Yes, I thought you would recognise it Barb. I have been looking at paint colours all morning and cannot decide whether to go light or dark, though right now I'm leaning towards dark. I'll post some pics soon.

Why you do it? Because you would grow old if you would stop to play... I read that somewhere :D. So we get to see proceedings anyway, even if they are in a different house...

Thanks Dee, that is so comforting to know I'm not alone in my shopping passion. LOL! Hopefully it won't tick along too long, I really would like to see it finished before my next birthday milestone, which is not too far away now. (GULP!)

Don't feel bad, Sandi! This is why there are so many opened dollhouse kits under people's beds (and eventually on eBay). Those instructions and all the sheets are so intimidating!!! The Beacon Hill is an especially ambitious kit, but I know you would do an amazing job with it. Maybe someday? It is definitely easier to work your way up to the big kits by building a confidence foundation with smaller ones. This new kit looks like oodles of fun and should make a great home for the girls!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jodi. I knew it would be a challenge, but I didn't realise just how much of a challenge it would be. The new one is a simple one, probably even more simple than the 1:6 scale room boxes I have been building. Changing it to the way I see it finished in my mind is going to be the fun part though.

It's always been a dream of me to own a dollhouse in this scale, so I will enjoy seeing your progress! A porch would look amazing, but of course that will be for later 😊. I'm sure you'll figure everything out, try to have lots of fun with building it! Hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteOh, we all do it and learn from it on the way. I never made a doll room, but still have plans to make a diorama. On the way I made a tipi for my smaller dolls. I enjoyed it a lot. There is always a meaning with everything and you will figure it out along the way. It is good for you to play more! Stay safe and big hugs from a very cold and snowy north hemisphere!
