Poor Patsy

I thought I'd share someone different today, she is a doll from my childhood which I discovered in a box, (recently delivered to me from my mother). There were three and this is the one who is most in need of tender love and care.

She is a 15 inch Palitoy Patsy drink and wet baby doll from the early 1950's. Her head is marked, "MADE IN ENGLAND PAT. NO. 535811" and her torso is marked, "BRIT. PAT. 600270, MADE IN ENGLAND, AUSTRAL. 135724, S.A. 813/46, CANADA. 466981".

The doll's head is made of hard plastic and her body a soft rubber. She used to drink, cry and wet, however, this is no longer the case.

Patsy has brown moulded hair, a very cute face with light pink rosy cheeks and a feeding mouth with faded pink lips, nice eyebrows and blue sleep eyes. I think her eyelashes are missing, but maybe they are just pushed in and could be pulled out with tweezers to normal length. Her eyes are pushed back slightly into her head and could use a little adjustment.

Patsy's cute, chubby rubber body really needs a good clean, her crier is missing from her back, but her fingers and toes are good. Although she's a little a worse for wear, I think I will give her a bath and knit her some pretty clothes. I might even have a go at fixing her eyes.

  1. Hello Sandy,

What a great doll and what a beautiful souvenir from your childhood. she might need a bit of tweaking, but overall she looks like she is in very good condition.

    1. Hi Giac,
She will need some attention before she will be beautiful I'm afraid, but it was nice to find her in one piece after all these years.
      Hugs,

  2. For a doll from the 1950's I think the condition is pretty good! I'm sure you will make this baby to look pretty again :D!

When I was little I wanted to keep all my dolls for when I grew up, but my mother gave them all to my sister one by one when She was born and She destroyed them all.
I no longer care about not having them, but it was awful at that time. I'm glad your mom kept these for you :)

    1. Hi Alejandra!
I would like to make her look like someone cares about her. She has managed to withstand another two generations of handling since I left home, so she deserves a little mothering now.

I'm sorry you mother gave your dolls to your sister, it wwould be nice for you to have them now.

  4. Hi Sandi!

Wow, the doll looks pretty good being the age she is. Sure you will give her a new life again and she'll look beautiful. It must be nostalgic to have her back again with you.

    Greetings ^^

  6. Oh I remember those types of dolls from my childhood (or something similar.) They used to have ads on tv about these dolls that were like real babies. I think I ended up going with the cabbage patch kids though, not that I even know what happened to those. My parents probably threw them out.

It's really nice that your mother kept your old toys.

    1. Hi Alasse, somehow I thought you were much, much younger than me. I think my mum only kept them so there was something for everyone else's kids to play with when they visited. But now I'm glad she did. :)

    2. Hey Xanadu, I might be younger, I just remember these sorts of dolls although this may not be the exact one. All I recall of the ads are young girls pushing the baby dolls in a pram and feeding and changing their nappies. You'll have to excuse my memory a bit. It gets a tad foggy the older I get!

  7. That's wonderful that you've been reunited with your childhood doll. My Mom has kept a lot of my stuff from when I was little and today, my kids play with some of it. Nothing dear or valuable but remarkable in that some of the toys are well over 40 years old.

On a related note, Palitoy would later go on to be one of the first foreign licensees for GI Joe. With a name change for the British and Commonwealth market, this license produced Joe would become Action Man. They were also the originators of the "life like" fuzz head Joes and the rubbery gripping hands that became known as Kung Fu Grip.

  8. That is wonderful that you were able to lay eyes on her after all of these years. I would love it if my mom surprised me with a box of my old dolls and toys! I think I will do that for my children...just tuck them away and surprise them later in life. Thanks for the inspiration!
    xo
