After hunting around for something suitable that I could use to cover the base, ordering and being bitterly disappointed with the wired moss, I actually found an imitation grass tile at Bunning's. It was quite large, but I figured I will probably use it for other props down the track.
Because the tile was quite stiff, I had to remove the Ent and mushroom from the base. I then used the wooden base as a template to cut a circle of grass and glued the grass onto the base using PVA glue. Using a scalple I cut a hole where the Ent was to sit and then all that was needed to finish the edges was a little touch up paint, which I mixed to match the grass.
I glued the Ent and mushroom back in place with my glue gun. Then using a couple of different brown acrylic paints, a little harvest gold, a touch of the green that I'd used for the edge of the base, I added streaks of the different colours all over making sure to get in all the grooves. Then I painted a blue grey wash over the top, before adding a final wash of pearl white. This made the bark look shiney, as if it had been weathered smooth by wind and rain.
I did not know Bunnings had grass tile. Is that where all the other tiles are? I've been wondering if you can just buy one tile as I want to use some for my figure photography work. I need to go look at Bunnings again. Need to buy a tomato plant anyway.
ReplyDeleteAnd wow. This is really stunning Xanadu. Your sculpting as I have mentioned before is fantastic and then the way you painted the Ent and mushroom coupled with that grass tile, it looks like something you would find in a forest and looks so natural. I just adore the painting on that Ent. It's so realistic.
You certainly have a lot of talent and many of them.
Can't stop staring at that Ent. So expressive. Thanks for sharing your progress with us!
Neither did I till I went looking Alasse. The tile is about a metre square and cost $20, but I think I could get a few projects out of it. You should find it down near the garden section where they sell shade cloth etc.
DeleteYou are so kind with your comments, but honestly I just like making things and I've had a lot of experience over the years. :) I don't mind sharing things especially if it helps or inspires others in some way. I'm sure you could do just as well.

The grass you found is just perfect! Have you considered making a full garden for your dollies with it? That would be so awesome!
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Don't tempt me Irene. Actually a kids park with play equipment would be okay if I could find the right props. :)

ReplyDeleteThank you Uraru. It's not perfect, but it wwill certainly be fun to use.:)

That grass is perfect! And your Ent is looking so good! I agree with Irene, you should do a big garden for your dollies!! :D
ReplyDeleteYes, Musume, the grass worked out really well and looks quite realistic IRL. Thank you, but I don't think I'll be tackling anything just yet, i'll have to think it through first...space to put it would be a problem. :)

A grass tile wow, never heard of such thing, I add myselft to Irene's comment to do a garden or park with it, you have amazing toy props you could use in it :D
ReplyDeleteyour Ent is looking great! that looks like a ton of work
Hi Alejandra, it's not real grass of course, even though it looks like it. We will see what the future brings, but if anything, it will probably be a park.
DeleteA little work maybe, but you could make one, it's really not that difficult.

This looks so good!!! I am so impressed with how it all turned out. So well done. This looks like something you could totally build upon over time (just like Irene hinted at!) :)

Hi Sandi,
ReplyDeleteFinally this has turned out amazing! I really love your Ent with the mushroom and that grass base, it looks very realistic.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to make a full garden, like Irene has suggested. Though it would be a lot of work XD
Greetings^^
Thank you Lily, I really need more time to take some photos with the fairies, let alone begin another project right now. Maybe next year I'll think about doing a kiddies play park, but I don't know about doing a garden.
