This is the second time I have attempted this post! The first time I accidently zapped the whole darn thing after I had uploaded photos and typed a good four paragraphs . . . was NOT HAPPY JAN!
-------------------------
I began my post with an excerpt from Chapter One (Pippi Moves into Via Villekulla) in my Pippi Longstocking book by Astrid Lindgren.
"Her hair was the colour of a carrot and it was plaited in two tight plaits that stuck straight out, Her nose was the shape of a very small potato, and it was completely covered with freckles. Under her nose was an exceptionally wide mouth with nice white teeth.
Her dress was quite odd. Pippi had made it herself. It was supposed to have been blue, but there hadn't been enough blue material, so Pippi had decided to sew on little red patches here and there. On her long thin legs she wore long stockings, one of them brown and the other black. And she wore black shoes that were exactly twice the length of her feet."
As you are already aware, my Pippi has carrot red hair. I have since combed out the curls, plaited and wired them. Freckles are now scattered over her nose and she already had a wide smile that showed off her tiny white teeth, so that needed nothing.
I've begun from the bottom up, although I have selected the fabrics for her dress too, but more on that later.
I didn't have any brown socks, so I tea dyed a white pair of baby socks and the black doll stockings I found in my stash were far too long, so I cut the top off one, made a hem at the top and threaded elastic through to hold it up.
The extremely large shoes Pippi wears in the story, were hard to come by. I had lots of large shoes, but not black, though I did find a pair of long boots that were large, but not quite twice as long as my Pippi's feet. They are, however, certainly much bigger that her feet (probably half the length again). I thought they would be okay if I cut the height of them down to a size that looked reasonably like shoes.
So that's what I have achieved so far, pictures of the dress will follow later.
Big hugs,
X

Looks like things are coming along nicely for this character doll you are working on.
ReplyDeleteSlowly, slowly Alasse. Had house full of visitors today, just when I thought I had some time to sit quietly to sew...isn't that the way it always seems to go. 🤔

They look great! I love how you are building her character :D

This is going to end great, I already can feel it!I'm excited~
ReplyDeleteOh that's good Alejandra, I'm glad you're excited, she's not really your type of doll is she? But I must admit, I get excited too when I see other people's doll projects even if their dolls are different to what I collect. :)

That is a very promising beginning. :) I can't wait for a next stage! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanne. :)

Looking really good! :)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about the long stockings. In the story she has one black and one brown, but in some of the cartoons and books and even on theatre scenes she has one green and one darker yellow. I sometimes wonder why.
Looking forward to seeing the next part! Hugs and Happy Halloween!
Hi Niina, I wondered about that myself, perhaps they felt black and brown were kinda dull colours and wouldn't appeal to children . . . who knows what goes on in the minds of these people!! I think that was also a good reason to make my own Pippi. :)

Ooooh coming along nicely then! I love the idea of the odd socks, I think dolls look so cute with socks that are mismatched.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing more!!
xx
Thanks Sharon, odd socks, one up one down is very childlike and I agree it looks quite cute. I'm still working on it. :)

Oh I loved Pippi Longstocking stories as a kid, and we had the swedish tv movies/series in our tv too! They were really great, I loved them so much and still the nostagia when I see your posts about Pippi.
ReplyDeleteI think the tea colouring is just perfect for her sock! :D And I love that they are slightly different hight. I'll be very interested to see how she will look when you've finished the dress. ^___^ Hugs! x
Seems she was a favourite of many dolly bloggers. :) I have never seen the movie/series, I don't think it was ever shown here in Australia.
DeleteThanks, I think the socks need to be different heights too, should look cute.
