I came across this Telephone Box when we were in Bunnings the other day for AU$15.60 (it's actually a money box) and although it is not 1:6 scale (more like 1:12 scale), it will still work as a prop with many of my smaller dolls.
I gave it one coat of red paint, which covered it quite well, I was not happy with the colour.
The shade of red I used was not quite bright enough, so I used a slightly brighter red when I gave it a second coat. It was also darn fiddly trying to paint the door and windows without getting paint on the perspex, and I ended up having to clean the perspex with a cotton bud.
The real phone boxes had the word "TELEPHONE" painted on a white section above the door and round the sides above the windows. I thought it would be too hard to paint and have it looking neat, so I printed it on paper then glued it on when all the painting was complete.
Then I made a door handle from jewellery findings which I found in my stash.
I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out and so is Truffles, a tiny elf who lives with Bon Bon and Gum Drop in a small Gingerbread House, which has no telephone. :)

It turned out great!! you made it look amazing and I can't wait to see it in use
ReplyDeleteThanks Alejandra, I wish it had been bigger, but the tiny dolls don't have a lot of these type of props, just really small items like musical instruments and tea sets. I will have to write a special story so I can use it, no doubt I'll think of something. :)

This is a great telephone box! Was it not possible to remove the perspex when you were painting it? I have a red telephone box here which is a candle holder, it's a lot bigger but I used it in some photos of my since adopted out Jerry Berry....it made a great prop, and yours will too, it looks very realistic with Truffles :)

Thanks, I was really happy I found it. Unfortunately not Sharon, the hole at the bottom of the box was round and not much bigger than an old penny. :) Still I was using acrylic paints so it wasn't too difficult to remove the little slips and sloshes.

Fantastic work! I love the color of the box, it's sooo... authentic :). And Truffles is so cute with her tiny teeth!
ReplyDeleteAh Chiriann we always aim for realism in our fantasy world. LOL! Truffles is a real cutie pie and one of my favourite PF's and I love her little teeth. I would have liked to have more face-ups done on my other PF's similar to this, but the lass who painted her for me doesn't do face-ups anymore . . . such a shame. :(

Ah this is the phone box you were telling me about. I love what you did with it and it looks like a great box. Can't wait to see it in photoshoots.
ReplyDeleteEvery time we go to Bunnings, hubby always points it out to me and I always said no it wouldn't work for my fashion dolls but seeing yours and your doll next to it, I realised I could use it for my Nendoroids as it's a great size for them. Hubby is going to Bunnings later so I told him to grab me one if it's there. So thank you for making me realise it could work for my Nendoroids. I need to start building more dioramas for them too.
Not sure how I will paint it yet. I will have to google some phone boxes for inspiration. Hubby thinks I should make it a Tardis.
Yes, it's going to come in handy for shoots. It would be great for your Nendoroids, it will take some mods to turn it into a Tardis though. When you see it along side the one you have you'll see what I mean.

Hi Sandi,
ReplyDeleteYour telephone box looks beautiful, now your dolls can use it to give a call to their friends or having the typical tourist photo with it.
Greetings ^^
Thank you Lily. The girls are already chatting away on the phone, probably be a major job getting them off the darn thing now. :)

Nice! The painting turned out well - and it really is a great size for the tiny dolls! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks JS, I'm happy with it and so are the PukiFees, can't get them off the phone now. :)

I have a giant phone box about the size of a 16" Tonner. It's really a CD holder, so it has shelves on the inside. Also, I don't think I've ever had it in direct sunlight, but the top has faded.
ReplyDeleteOh Ah you are the lucky one, I know someone who would love one that size. :) Shelves are a good idea, you can put the dolly phone books in there. LOL! Just give it another coat of paint Barb and it'll be right as rain in no time.

Hello! I wonder who Truffles is going to call?! Beautiful telephone box and one can surely do some great finds at different stores. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteDid your girls not hear their telephone ringing?? LOL! You know me by now, cannot resist bringing home these type of finds, and my eyes are constantly on the look out for anything that dollies can use. :)

When I saw the unpainted box, I thought you were going for the Dr Who setup! I have never seen the series, but it looked appropriate, I guess. The red paint and telephone thing looks great!
ReplyDeleteDo your 16cm dolls fit there? I've been wanting one of these for such a long time! I will definitely bother you to share that list of amazing prop sources you have!
Alasse did the Dr.Who one, I may do one down the track but I have no story for it at present.
DeleteYes, my PukiFee is that size, but if you wanted to put her inside you would need to cut out the bottom as the money hole isn't big enough for her to fit through. These you can buy from any Bunnings store in Melbourne, but the other furniture you need to order online from https://fairymeadowminiatures.com.au as they are in N.S.W.
