Holly Golightly - Breakfast at Tiffany's

Almost sixty years after Breakfast at Tiffany's first premiered (1961), it's still movie magic, if you haven't watched it yet, I encourage you to do so!

Audrey Hepburn's costumes seen throughout the movie are as noteworthy and fashionable today as they were then, and she wore this little black dress like no other woman has ever done!

The pearls, the hat, the sunglasses, simply added to her elegance.

There were several things I liked about this movie, and aside from the story itself, it's the costuming that I remember the most. Designed by Hubert de Givenchy and supervised by Edith Head (my favourite costume designer), they were absolutely stunning!

NOTE: Givenchy donated the black satin gown, shown in the top picture, to City of Joy Aid, and in 2006 the dress was auctioned off at Christie’s for more than $900,000.

I find movies like this, those with beautiful costuming, often inspire me to make something special for my dolls. Do you have a favourite movie, costumer, designer or someone who insires you when dressing your dolls?

  1. When it comes to my BJD, my greatest inspiration is the "Dynasty Warriors" game series :). I'm not able to make clothes exactly like the one in the game, but I always get new ideas from there . Sometimes they even work ;)

    1. Hi Chiriann,
The clothes you make don't have to be exactly the same as the ones in the game, as long as the game inspires you to develop an idea and create something that you are happy with. You are doing that, so that is all that really matters.

  2. Those older movies, classical ones, are such a delight to watch just for the sake of dialog and outfits. At the moment I am following "Mad Men" and the outfits the ladies have in this series are wonderful. It is set in 1960's New York. Love the fashion!
    Hugs!

    1. I think most doll collectors have an affiliation with fashion Niina, it seems to go hand in hand. "Mad Men" had some great hats too! I wish hats were properly in fashion now, and I don't just beanies and sun hats either! :)
      Big hugs.

  3. Barb the Evil Genius has left a new comment on your post "Holly Golightly - Breakfast at Tiffany's":

I actually designed and sewed that top dress for someone, in 16" fashion doll size. I haven't really done as much doll sewing for myself as I would like to, with one thing and another, but I'm hoping 2020 will be a good year for it. My biggest inspirations are vintage magazines.

    1. Sorry Barb, I did it again . . . sometimes I can't control my mouse. :)

That would have been lovely, I hope you find time to sew again I would love to see some of your work. I can see how vintage magazines would be a good source of inspiration, not only for fashion but interior design as well. :)

  4. Oh my you're going back in time even further Linda, but I can see why it would inspire you. The black topped white tulle skirt gown that EH designed for Grace Kelly was absolutely gorgeous. Yes, I do remember that one too, it was another Givenchy and Head collaboration. I didn't realise you were also a EH fan. :)

  5. Ah Breakfast at Tiffany's... that was a good movie. And her outfit is iconic now. You see it on a lot of dolls too. (Interestingly enough, I was looking at versions of Audrey Hepburn in movies that were made by Barbie!) I love Audrey Hepburn. I think I've watch most, not all, most of her movies. She's one of my favourites. I loved Sabrina. But I'm a bit of a romantic at heart!

Hmm, I don't think I have a favourite movie, I tend to have lots of those! But if I had to choose, I would say that I really like the elven fashions in Lord of The Rings series. I am so inspired by them. Shame I can't sew them though! Although I will try one of these days. In terms of Classic movies, it would have to be Sabrina. I love the outfits in that movie.

I have actually been trying to find the Barbie version of her in that gorgeous white gown. But so far, it's pricey!

    1. Do you know I have never seen it on any dolls Alasse, but I guess that's because I very rarely look at Barbie. Yes, Audrey was a wonderful actress, with the perfect figure for modelling clothes. I don't think I have ever seen her in an outfit when she's not looked elegant. I loved Sabrina too!

If you thinking fantasy, I have to agree with you there. :)

      Good luck with your hunt!

    2. In addition to Barbie, Pullip also made Audrey dolls, one in the short black dress with the large hat, and one of Sabrina in the black and white dress. There's also a Pullip Audrey doll from Roman Holiday, too.

  6. Ahhh- Audrey Hepburn. I always admired her. My inspiration for a doll's style is an idea of the character, but I guess my ideas are limited by my own taste. I can do ruffles and frills, but I always thought less is more. If you haven't seen it, Coco Chanel featuring Audrey Tautou is worth watching.

    1. Well she was the perfect "clothes hanger" and everything always looked perfect on her, so it would be difficult for anyone not to admire her. I can see how that works for you and understand that frills are not for everyone. I haven't seen it, but no doubt will have plenty of time for watching things now we daren't venture out . . . thanks for the tip. :)

  7. I love Audrey's look, she so beautiful and elegant. Just perfect.
I often choose movies or series because of the costumes. :) Especially historical and fantasy. They inspire me to sew doll outfits in various styles. I admire the creators of these costumes and their attention to detail. For me, some of the most beautiful are in "Game of Thrones" and "Outlander". But lately I also love the dresses in "The Crown". :)

    1. Historical and fantasy movies are wonderful inspirations and one can see it in the garments you make Joanna. So shall we see some reproductions of "The Crown" costumes soon?

  8. Audrey Hepburn was so beautiful and elegant, wasn't she! I'm sure she modeled herself on me ;)
    LOL :D
Sadly I'm very boring and my doll outfits are really only inspired by the children I see or the children's clothing in shop windows. I don't have any elegant dolls, just kids.
As for myself, I had a lovely 'little black dress' many years ago when I had a 'lovely slim body' to fit into it, alas those days are in the past and now, well, I seem to dress just for comfort :(

    1. Oh yes Sharon, you and me both! ROFL!!
I certainly don't think your doll outfits are boring, I love that you make children's clothes for your dolls, I mean most of your dolls are children anyway. However in saying that, if you ever did get inspired to make an elegant gown, you could make it larger than the doll, so it looked like your kids were playing dress up. :)
Me too, now matter how I try, I know I'll never get back to being a UK/AU size 10 ever again.

  9. I love this era of ladies clothes! So elegant, so feminine. My Madame Alexander Cissy is from this era and I love her dresses. I have made her hats and belts and handbags. So much fun! I am hoping to have more time to sew this year as well. sigh

    1. Looking how current fashion is heading, I'll not be at all surprised if we don't see a few more of this style appearing on the runways. I just wish it would all go back to the days when we all wore hats (not beanies or sun hats) REAL STYLISH HATS! I just adore them.

I shall look forward to seeing more of your sewing Brenda.
