One of the many introductions in the 1950's fashion parade was the ballerina length dresses and gowns that Dior made famous. Dior specifically used the phrase "Demi Longueur" to refer to this longer hem line.
Madam Alexander was quick to incorporate this length into her costuming for Cissy, as shown in this article written by Bruce Allen de Armond.
There are several other terms used for this signature length and there are slight differences in the term of “tea-gown,” “3/4 length” and “ballerina length” . . . however, overall, "demi longueur" is the one featured in the numerous dresses and gowns made for “Cissy” from 1955 to 1962 by Madame A.
However, I have wondered if Madame A may have initially been inspired by this beautiful, feminine gown made by Dior in 1947, as she used often tulle to make Cissy's dresses.
Now, do you remember this post, well her hair kept getting tangled and her boots fell apart, so I decided to take a leaf out of Madam A's book and make my Cissy a new outfit . . . my own version of the "demi longueur".
This dress is completely handsewn, including the top stitching on the collar . . .
and the pin tucking on the skirt.
I also changed her wig, to a Monique Gold with beautiful ringlet curls. It's still fine hair, but it's more manageable than the one she came with, and as luck would have it, I had a pair of shoes that matched this outfit and which fitted her perfectly.
Sometimes things simply fall into place and now she's redressed, I feel she deserves to keep her original name . . . Cissy!
Grandes abrazos,
X
Like they say in "Eloise," Dior is divine! Man, you really made your Cissy doll look lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much RM, I am so pleased you think so. :)

What a perfect dress for her, and the shoes that match so well! I have to ask what stitch you use to sew the seams; mine tend to gap when I hand sew them. Maybe it's just a matter of practice? I do admire your sewing skills, and I love her new wig.
ReplyDeleteThank you Barb. I always use a backstitch, but the real trick is to keep your stitches tiny and taught. It's time consuming, but I find hand stitching very relaxing and the results much more satisfying. That's so kind of you to say, but like anything, the more you do something, the better you become. I think it also takes a small amount of discipline too, you have to control the temptation to get it done quickly and not let your stitches get a gallop up, if you get my drift. :) I'm sure you will master it, you have the determination.

Thank you so much Linda. I was so happy when I found that I had those shoes in my stash, I had originally purchased them for one of my BJD's but never used them. The wig is very close to the original, I kept the colour the same, but it has more definite curls.

I always think of Audrey Hepburn when I see dresses like that- even if they're not black. She looks lovely, and the tiny details add femininity to the dress without looking too girly.
ReplyDeleteOh me too, she wore many dresses that length, some in films, some off screen, most of which were designed for her by the brilliant Hubert de Givenchy. Thank you Mia, I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. :)

Wonderful dress! And it's perfect for your Cissy, she seems really happy about it. Same with the shoes and new wig - such an elegant lady! And, of course, I admire your sewing skills!
ReplyDeleteThank you Chiriann, she is looking pretty pleased isn't she. :) I was concerned when her boots fell apart, as I didn't think I had any shoes that would fit her, but lady luck was on my side.

That is one beautiful dress and she looks so pretty in it! Love the wig, such a chic lady!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Thank you Niina! I was happy with the way the dress turned out.
