Autumn Gardening

This time of year is often when I have less dolly time as the garden needs some attention. Earlier on we pulled out all our lavender shrubs as they were getting woody and infested with red mites. This left spaces that needed to be filled, and fill them we did!

We planted a dozen azaleas which are looking quite lost in the space but the three colours we chose will hopefully look like this when they flower.

We also planted lots of these colourful leaf plants under the trees. They are shade lovers so hopefully we will eventually get some decent ground cover where we find it almost impossible to get anything to grow.

Can't remember the names of these plants, but the burgundy leaves should make a nice contrast with the light green leaves on the plants along our fence.

Well that's about all for today, be back again in a few days!
Hugs,
X

  1. I know our garden needs some major maintenance work but we've been waiting for cooler weather to do it! I love Azaleas. They're such bright cheery flowers. I have a massive Jasmine bush near my driveway. It's one of my favourite scents. Jasmine and Gardenia. Although I am not sure how Gardenia would go here.Sounds like a productive day!

    1. Hi Alasse,
I'm not the best gardener, neither is hubby, we tend to kill a lot of plants with kindness. LOL! However, Azaleas and Camellias seem to thrive so hence the planting of so many.
I love Jasmine and have one in the courtyard, Gardenias we tried but failed terribly with them. I'm not sure how they would go up there, but if you check online you should find some info to help.

  2. Hello Sandy,
It is a shame about the lavender, but the plants you chose to replace it are amazing. I hope we get to see pictures when they will bloom.

    1. HI Giac,
Yes, I love the smell of it and it attracted the bees, but things don't always work out the way we planned. Yes, I will post some of the garden when it's in full bloom. :)

  3. The azaleas will look lovely with these different nuances of pink and red. I had to look up red mites, I didn't know these insects, they sound and look like nasty creatures! I'm glad you got rid of the infested plants.

    1. I hope so Linda, I tend to go more for the warm pinks and reds, even though there are some very pretty mauve tones in the nursery. Those mites are so tiny you don't even know they're there until you see the damage they cause. Hopefully, they all went with the plants and none remain in the garden now.

  4. Hello! Spring is turning slowly to summer over here and it is a lot of gardening here too. It will be more in a months time, when our time at the cottage starts. It is relaxing. Where I lived as a kid, we had a huge park with a lot of azaleas. Truly a beautiful flower.
    Hugs!

    1. Yes Sharon we have, I was hoping this planting was the end of it, yet there is always more to do in the garden this time of year. So it grows wild there? I don't think the plant flowers, but the leaves are pretty.

  6. I'm sure you'll have much to do with your garden during the spring. ^__^ It is great to be outside when weather is warming up and first flowers are rising up from the ground. :) I also wish to see many photos from your garden later on. And, if possible, maybe you have some flowers which attracts butterflies, I'd love to see which ones visits your garden. ^-^ Hugs.

So sorry about the lavender, the azaleas you've chosen to replace it are beautiful. Don't worry if you have less time for dolly stuff, I like to see this kind of posts as well.
