Vintage Style for Ivy

I do enjoy sewing, but there are times when I look at my fabric stash and think "Where do I begin?" However, sorting out my storage has helped me focus on something I have wanted to do for a long time and just kept putting on the back burner. In my stash I have some beautiful tana lawn, pretty gauze in pastel colours and lovely dotted Swiss cotton, all of which are perfectly suited to vintage style dresses.

Anyway to cut a long story short, I made another dress using the same pattern I had used for Fifi Muffet's and Mia Mary's dresses. This time adding more lace, a few pintucks, some hand dyed silk ribbon and velvet flowers.

I'm reasonably happy with the way it and her bloomers, have turned out and think the outfit looks lovely on Ivy my Narsha Zihu. What's more, it's inspired me to finally give her a long awaited face-up, which if all goes well, photos will follow shortly.

I may give her a hat or bonnet and a parasol as well, to complete her look. The only thing I am not happy about is her shoes, she has a rather large big toe that tends to stick upwards, which makes finding the right style of shoe to fit, a little difficult. If only I could remember where I purchased these gold ones from, I would order more in other colours.

Well that's about it for today, I'd better move my butt if I want to make this girl come to life. :)

EDIT 4.50pm: Well move my butt I did, but I am so frustrated with the darn eyelashes. Does anyone else have a problem with them? I think I need to try some different ones to the ones I'm using, they just don't curve nicely and I am really p****d off  that I managed to get glue on the face-up, so Ivy now has shiny spots on her face. Looks like it's gonna be off with this face-up and a fresh start another day (when hubby's not around to keep interrupting me with cups of tea).
Hugs to you all,
X

  1. Hello Sandy,
She is beautiful. The dress is lovely. I love the way it flows, almost like being caught in a spring breeze. The lace detail and velvet flowers are wonderful touches.

    1. Thank you Giac. Hopefully she will be more so when I manage to do her face-up the way I always imagined her. :) I particularly like working with fine fabrics like this, they have such a lovely soft hand and fall so nicely, so I hope to do more in this style soon.

  2. Wow this dress is stunning. I love the vintage style and I think this particular style, design and colour just look amazing on your Zihu. Can't wait to see her with a face up!

Eyelashes are a pain. I use a cotton bud soaked in plain water to wipe off any excess glue that gets anywhere. I have it sitting next to me so I can wipe it off straight away before it has a chance to dry if it gets in areas it's not supposed to. I have used those small curved tweezers to place the eyelashes in and I find that can help. I have tried two methods recently. Putting the glue on the actual lid on the underside first then putting in the lashes (this can get messy). The second method I tried tonight on my second attempt at putting in eyelashes was to put glue on the lashes and carefully insert and once it's in place, using a toothpick, gently press down in place. I also use a toothpick to apply the glue in both methods. Then I let it set overnight. Plain water I find makes the glue runny enough to wipe off without too much issue.

I am using Dollmore eyelashes which I find are always nice quality. And they curve really nicely. The other method I have seen people use is to cut the eyelashes into several sections and glue them in individually to adjust the way they curve. I have never tried this method.

I do feel your pain. I think eyelashes are one of the most frustrating things to put in.

    1. I'm so pleased you like it Alasse, it's a simple style but can be finished in a completely different way each time. :)

I did read about your brush with the frustrating eyelashes the other day, and knew I should have been more patient when doing mine, but you understand that need we have to get the job finished. I did do them the way you have suggested, but unfortunately it didn't work so well for me. I will try Andrea's technique with different lashes when I redo her and see how that goes. One lives and learns.

  3. What a beautiful red haired girl! The outfit is gorgeous and I love the bloomers and the accent of the flowers :-).
Lol I just read Alasse's post about eyelashes, it seems it's going around! If eyelashes are not supple enough and don't curve in the right way, it's so difficult to glue them on isn't it!

    1. Thank you so much Linda, she is a lovely doll, the Dollmore resin is so smooth and without seam lines showing. I seem to be leaning more towards sewing a vintage look at the moment and I'll go with it while the urge is there as I am happy with the results myself. :)

Oh yes those eyelashes are a real bugbear, but I'm sure we'll all get there in the end . . . practice makes perfect. LOL!

  5. She looks beautiful, the outfit is really lovely...I never would have thought a white resin girl would look so great in white! Perfect.
As for the eyelashes, aren't they a pain to put on! I need to get some more soon as I've more or less run out, I usually buy Monique ones for BJDs but have cut down human false lashes for them too. But whatever lashes I use it is always a pain in the bum to attach the darn things. :(

    1. Thank you so much Sharon, being a sewer yourself, your comments mean a great deal to me. :)
Oh yes, and at the moment she still has her little short ones on and I think they are ghastly! I will get round to doing her face up again when I find the right eyelashes...maybe I will give the Monique ones a go, but I'm still not looking forward to doing them. :(

  7. Haha, don't I know about the big toe - it is like a signum for those Narsha Dolls. Shoes are a bit hard to find, especially when looking at other places than Dollmore.
Ivy looks so cute in her new dress! And I keep my thumbs up for you and a new face up. The eye lashes can be a pain.
    Hugs!

    1. I guessed you would Niina, knowing you had a Narsha of your own. :) Of all the dolls I own she is the one with the least amount of shoes!!
Somehow I think it will be a little while before she gets a new face, I tend to put face-ups off . . . I hate replacing eyelashes!!
