Coming Up Roses

Perhaps not all pink, but these roses do make me feel happy, just as pink and Fridays do.
I hope they make you feel happy too!

If you are buying rose bushes for your garden how do you choose them? For scent? For colour?

The man of the house advises, "Always buy your roses after a shower of rain."

"That way you can tell the ones that are going to look bravely up from their stems come sunshine or shower, from those that will droop in a bad summer."

My favourite rose is Double Delight . . . it has the most beautiful old fashioned rose perfume, just like potpourri . . . and reminds me of my grandmother.

Heavily flushed and edged carmine to red. It begins with a red bud opening to this lovely bi-colour and then fades slowly to cream with a light pink edge. Bushes are of medium size, of good health and vigor with long strong stems and a strong fragrance.

Double Delight is one of the World's favourite tea roses, and was inducted into the Rose Hall of Fame in 1985.

Do you have a favourite rose?

Big hugs,
X

    1. I love roses RM, you certainly can't beat them for fragrance. Do you know what your white rose bush is called?
      Big hugs.

  2. I never try to grow plants here. They always die. Even Orchids. I had one for three months and everyone said how hardy the plants were and you only had to water them once a week which I did but it still managed to rot the root.

I love that last rose. I like how the colours are two different ones.

    1. Isn't that when people say you killed them with kindness Alasse? Try not to worry about it too much, it's only taken several decades to finally get something to grow under the trees in our front garden. LOL!

You would love it's fragrance too, it's my favourite. :)

  3. Absolutely gorgeous flowers! I have some roses in my garden, but they were bought and placed there by my grandfather... so I have no idea, what he had in mind. Mostly colour, I guess... Most of them are sightly pink and white, but there is a small bush with dark red flowers and strong fragrance. They are my favourites - for some reason, they remind me of dragon :).

    1. I expect they are quite old then Chiriann. The dark red could possibly be a Papa Meilland, they have a beautiful flower shape and a very strong fragrance. Perhaps it's the colour that reminds you of a dragon's fiery breath. :)

  4. Hello Sandy,
I love them all. I would love to take a corner of my yard and plant only rosebushes...maybe one day.

    1. Hi Giac! I imagined you would and maybe when your not so busy, you will finally have that little corner and take time to smell the roses. I guess most of it is currently taken up with being a parent???

  5. Very pretty! :)

I had wild rose buses in the front garden of my house in Calgary. I moved ten years ago, but I have fond memories of photographing those flowers so I miss them for that.

    1. Thank you JS. Oh wild roses are lovely too. I was admiring some of the early species the other day, the type with only a few petals which seem to do very well rambling in French gardens . . . so pretty. So I can see how you would miss them.

  6. Roses are beautiful :)

In my city-garden we have briar (wild roses) and we are fighting with it, because it is trying to take control on our garden and kill our quince bush. We are trying to force our briar to stick to one corner of the garden but this plant knows better :D

    1. Yes they certainly are BB. I haven't really had any experience with brier roses, but I can see how they could get out of hand. By the sounds of it, you will need to do some hard pruning (WEARING GLOVES) before you will get the upper hand. I wish you and your little quince bush much luck.

  7. I have a 'queen of sweden', a light pink tea rose. Very pretty but prone to pests. My resiliant rambler is my favorite, it's scent is lovely and the bumble bees love it. Love the orange one, the second of your list.

    1. Hi Mia,
That's a beautiful rose too, I love the double petals and it's very delicate pink colour (perfect for today). That's the problem with roses, aphids and black spot are my biggest problem, but neither have been bad this year, thank heavens. Anything that encourages the bees is a blessing in the garden. The orange one is Iced Ginger, it begins that colour, turns to pale pink then almost cream. The one I had in my garden was very old and we removed it when we changed our garden layout.

  8. Beautiful photos!

I do love roses. I chose them for the scent in the first place. My favourite one is historical rose "Madame Boll" - she smells so intensively!

  9. Those roses are beautiful, I wouldn't be able to choose a favourite although that two tone one is gorgeous! And yes, roses always look particularly lovely with a few drops of water on them, nestled between the petals.
    I hope you're having a great weekend!

    1. I know it's very hard to choose just one Sharon as there are so many pretty roses. I prefer ones with fragrance myself, and if you ever get a chance to smell the Double Delight you will understand why I chose that one for my garden.
Busy weekend, but the sun is out and it's a beautiful day . . . hope yours is too!

  10. Roses are pretty! They are not my favourite flower because they do not last that much... not even on the plant. But they look gorgeous and are ideal for photos!

    1. I cut mine just as the bud is about to open Musume and they last just over a week, but the fragrance that fills the house is wonderful.
