Project: More 1:6 Scale Furniture (Part 2)

Yesterday afternoon, after I had finished the wardrobe, I painted the table and chairs midnight blue (a colour I mixed myself to match the fabric I'm going to use on the chairs). But I wasn't really pleased about the table looking just like a painted wooden table.

I had in mind something a bit different, like one that had a marble or granite top. So I pulled out these two Folk Art paints from my stash (#659 Metallic Pearl White and #660 Pure Gold) along with a couple of small pieces of sea sponge and began dabbing first with the Pearl and then while it was still wet I dabbed with the Gold.

You have to be very careful NOT to drag the sponge across your work, dab straight up and down, making sure there is not too much paint on the sponge. I always have an old rag beside me, so I can dab on that before I dab the table.

Now all I have to do is give this a coat of gloss, as I want it to shine, then I can begin upholstering the chairs. Sorry the photos are not very clear, I just took a couple of quick snaps, to show you what I am up to with the furniture.

Big hugs,
X

  1. Okay, that turned out brilliant. I love how your table looks. It certainly looks quite different and I can even imagine it in an outdoor setting as well. Very creative work!

    1. I ended up giving it a granite look rather than the marble, purely because it was easier to create (well it was for me). I'm working on that set again today, so hopefully I can get it finished. :)

    1. Thank you Mia, well hopefully now you've seen how to do it, you can have one. Same principal would apply to a life size one, I did the same finish on my kitchen bench tops. :)

  7. I love the "sponge effect" on the table :) My friend used this method to decorate drawers in her kitchen cabinet. :)

    1. Thank you BB, it's a simple one, but it does create a different look and it's great for people (like me) who get bored with looking at a plain finish or just need a change. :)

  9. Oh my goodness that looks great! I really like the effect you've created there and once it's got the shine on it, it'll look just like marble or granite. Well done, you're so good at this sort of thing!!! :)

    1. Thanks Sharon, I have given the table three coats already, but I am debating about making it real shiny because it may be too reflective when it comes to taking photos. I'm between a rock and a hard place right now.:(

It's very kind of you to say, but I'm really only an amateur. :)

  10. This time I managed to read the post in order, yay! That happens for being so behind on the reading T_T

Anyways, the table is _goals_! Lady, you have outdone yourself it looks so real! I love how this is turning out, honestly! I never heard of that brand of paint. Are those acrylics?

    1. Hahaha! And I am answering you backwards. Both Jo Sonja and Folk Art by Plaid are acrylic paints, I mainly use JS, but FA have some lovely specialist colours that sparkle.
