After spending two whole days trying to perfect a diamond button back for my new sofa and making my hands sore, almost to the point of making them bleed, from pulling the thread through the buttons as tight as I could manage, I finally gave up on the idea.
Normally, I would try and try again until I succeeded in what I set out to do, but this time no matter what I tried, I just couldn't get the back to look the way I wanted. It was only my determination to finish this sofa so I could move on to the coffee table, which actually stopped me from throwing the darn thing across the room in sheer frustration.
So once again the plain back appears on my new sofa, but I must admit, now I have calmed down, I think it looks quite nifty.
The coffee table, although a little smaller than I would have liked, turned out really well. I managed to give the top a pale pink marble finish this time, but I could have been a little out of my depth if I hadn't watched this tutorial which I found on You Tube. Surprisingly the technique is a lot easier than I thought it would be.
The ornate "carving" on the front of the sofa was achieved by gluing on stamped brass jewelry findings.
I also made a couple of square cushions from an inexpensive cotton lawn stuffed with poly-fill, then some pretty pink loose covers from quilting fabric. I prefer to have loose covers when possible, as it makes it easier to change the look of a room simply by changing the covers. The third oblong pillow has a permanent cover though and will eventually have a tassel at each end to finish it off (I just need to find some small enough).
The diorama features:
Superfresco foam wallpaper for the dado wall - Bunnings
Stik-a-Tex cotton adhesive fabric available on the floor and the right wall - Spotlight
Metallic scrapbook paper on the left wall - Spotlight
Picture frame and potplant - Spotlight
Faux suede from my stash used as the carpet
Furniture painted and upholstered by me - Fairy Meadow Miniatures
Now you all know what I have been working on. :) I hope you are having a wonderful weekend, I'll be back again soon, but I am working on another project now.
Big hugs,

I think that it looks really good - even if it's not what you planned. I like the colour. Your lady looks very pleased with the set. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanna. I think we both are. :)

I like both sofa and marble table very much. I think plain back of the sofa looks nice and elegant :)
ReplyDeleteThank you BB. I am happy with it now I have had time to look at it, and not quite so disappointed it didn't turn out the way I originally wanted.

Your sofa looks absolutely perfect and doesn't need anything more! And it looks so comfy too, with the pillows on it... Little table turned on great too (love the pink marble :)). The whole diorama is fantastic in every detail.
ReplyDeleteYou are so kind Chiriann. It's more padded than the last sofa I did and I think the arms being padded make it look softer too. Now I have mastered the marbling technique I am keen to do more. :)

Hello!
ReplyDeleteWell, the sofa and the diorama looks so great! Love the color too! You did good, even if I can understand the frustration. Always nice to have something else to focus on, before everything just goes out the window.
And your new dollie looks fabulous!
Hugs!
Hello Niina!
DeleteWell I've got over the immediate frustration and am happy with the final look now, so all is well that ends well. :) Thank you!
Big hugs,

What a lovely diorama you've put together there and well done on the furnishings and the little coffee table. I can relate to the frustration of not being able to do something that you really wanted to do, but you have done a lovely job of the sofa without the diamond button back, it looks really great.
ReplyDeleteThe whole scene looks perfect to me!
Big hugs
Sharon xx
It's a bit of a mismatch of classic and modern Sharon, but then I guess that's me all over. I really like eclectic decor, it's fun and interesting. Thank you so much, your opinion is one that I always appreciate.

You keep reminding me that I want to buy some furniture kits myself and try them out. Something else just keeps coming up first to grab my interest (and money!)
ReplyDeleteOh do Barb, they are so much fun to put together (frustrations aside) and can also be quite therapeutic. :) As long as you have acrylic paints and scrap fabric on hand, the whole process doesn't amount to much money.
DeleteI shall be keeping an eye on you. :)

This diorama is looking fab!! I love the colors and how modern it looks despite having so many classic elements. And also pink! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you Alejandra. Yes perfectly eclectic as I said to Sharon. :) Oh yes and pink . . . no surprise there, eh?

This looks great! I really love the style both of the sofa and coffee table. I have to admit, I didn't expect the table to look quite that small. I haven't put mine together yet though. Loving the marbling effect, it turned out really good. And I wondered how you did the embellishment of the gold on the sofa. You have been busy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alasse, although the coffee table is smaller than I would have liked, it does work. The embellishment was also a little on the small side, but I think it looks okay. Next on the agenda is an mid-century room (with objects anywhere from the 50's to 70's). :)

Those are amazing pieces of furniture! I want to do a marble effect on a coffe table too, but that will have to wait until summer, when I won't be busy with college.
ReplyDeleteTake care.
Thank you and welcome to my blog! Do try it, I had so much fun with this process and it's such a lovely effect. It would look great on Roman columns, so I may try that later. Do you have a blog? If you do please leave a link.

I've seen your reply now, but it seems you have already found my blog LOL
