Project: Mid-Century Diorama Inspiration

My inspiration for the diorama that I an currently working on, came from early furniture by Italian, and in particular Finnish designers. I have included some furniture pieces you may find familiar, though you may not be fully aware of their history.

The Italian company Kartell, founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, is famous around the world for having invented the culture of plastic furniture and interior fittings. Giulio, a chemical engineer with a vision to create something good from plastics, (a material whose applications at this time, were still relatively unexplored) collaborated with designer Gino Colombini and won the firm its first Compasso d’Oro award in 1955.

Since the 1960s and 70s, Kartell has become an enduring household name due to famous designs by Anna Castelli Ferrieri (above) and Cesare "Joe" Colombo in the 1960s to more recent hits such as Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chairs (left) and Ron Arad’s fun Bookworm shelves (right).

You will see more furniture these days made from Lucite® a high quality plastic acrylic nearly half the weight of glass, yet with added durability. It is available in a variety of  colours and lasts longer than other plastics with its resistance to yellowing and fading.

The Tulip Chair (left) by Eero Saarinen, a Finnish American architect and industrial designer. Saarinen first received critical recognition, while still working for his father, for a chair designed together with Charles Eames for the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition in 1940, for which they received first prize. The "Tulip Chair", like all other Saarinen chairs, was taken into production by the Pennsylvania based Knoll furniture company, which was founded in New York City in 1938 by Hans Knoll.

The Ball Chair (right) by Eero Aarnio a Finnish interior designer, noted for his innovative furniture designs in the 1960s, was created in 1963.

We see these designs now being reproduced and for sale in furniture stores worldwide. Not only are they made for those of us interested in using these "almost timeless designs" in their homes today, these pieces are also being reproduced in China for our dolls.

Some may refer to these items as retro, but according to Wikipedia "Retro style is a style that is imitative or consciously derivative of lifestyles, trends, or art forms from the historical past, including in music, modes, fashions, or attitudes. It may also be known as vintage inspired."

It generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen or twenty years, which means now even the late 1990's could be retro, so, retro is not a word I like to use to describe historical furniture design of any sort, as it really doesn't relate to any particular period in time. Whereas mid-century modern is the design movement in interior, product, graphic design, architecture and urban development after the second world war, from roughly 1945 to 1975.

During this time, colour played a very important roll in the interior of the homes and I love the way the bright colour accents made interior design ideas feel warm and energetic. Adding a splash of cheerful and optimistic colour to rooms, like those below, makes me feel warm and cosy.

Strangely the colour blue and violet never seemed very popular with the Finns during this period and I have often wondered if they preferred the warmer colours because of their snow and ice climate. :)

Now, even though my room may be inspired by these designs, I shall certainly be looking to decorate my room from a different perspective. After all Australia is not Finland and we have a much warmer climate, so the you may well see purple, blue, aqua and green, instead of red, orange, yellow and lime, or it may even be a little of both, you'll just have to wait and see.

Hope you all are having as much fun as I am.
Big hugs,
X

  1. I remember those shroom-like ball chairs. My parents used to have one, but my mom always hit her head on the top, and after a while it was gone. I do like the colors, but you are right, a warmer climate might call for some cooler colors. I am looking forward to your version. I am sure it'll be great.

    1. That wouldn't have been very nice for your Mom Mia so I guess she finally had enough of that chair! Thank you, I hope it won't disappoint.

Nowhere near as wonderful as yours, but it's proving to be fun to make. Just waiting on a few more deliveries of goodies. :)

  3. An interesting post Sandy, I really like this type of furniture. Our local Ikea in Malaga, used to have all the old catalogue covers as picture on one of their walls and it was really lovely to see all the different designs of past years, like the ones in your photos.
I love the warm custard-y yellows and agree that the Finns probably chose those colours to brighten up what must be very long cold winters in their part of the world.
I look forward to seeing what you do, there are so many options to choose from :)
    Big hugs Sharon xx

    1. Thank you Sharon. I've always had an interest in furniture design and architecture. I also worked in the furnishing industry many, many years ago and much of what was new then is once again new, to this current generation at least. For us it's more like a stroll back down memory lane. LOL!

I must admit I prefer warmer colours in my own home. However, many of the new homes around us are decorated in fairly neutral colours, but I think that is beginning to change due to all the reno shows on the TV.

BTW this isn't the only room I'm working on. :)

  4. That era did love their orange and yellows quite a bit. Although I love the furniture and designs of that era myself. In fact, hubby's parents used to have a lot of furniture in that early style before they modernised their place. That ball chair is one I have for my IT dolls, came with one of my Poppy Parker dolls as an extra.

Can't wait to see the diorama WIP.

    1. Hi Alasse, You know I can remember painting the kitchen cupboards in my old home bright lime green and having yellow and lime floral wallpaper in my dining room ... those were the days!! LOL!

Oh you were lucky to get one when it was released, much cheaper than the one I have just purchased, but I had to have it!! Still waiting for it to arrive along with a few other pieces, but photos will be taken along the way.

  5. I do. :) It's so fun to see all of this interiors.

I never wanted to have a design like that in my own house but I find them really nice. And they are a great choise for dolls - that's for sure.

And I definitely prefer blue and green over the orange! :)

  6. This is very interesting style! Can't wait to see your diorama - I especially like the chairs. Although I'm not a fan of plastic, in some cases it may look very innovative, and, well, elegant!

I'm not a fan of plastic furniture for my own home either, but it's fun furniture for the dolls.

  7. To be honest I've not seen much red, yellow or orange in any Finnish homes I've visited. I had a rented apartment where was bright yellow kithcen cabinet doors from 70's but otherwise I feel like there's not much bright colours around. :) Mostly my friends seem to like muted colours and not anything as bright as there is. I like the ball chair thing. It'd be great for dolls. ;) if there'd be a right size.

    1. Ah Xaya, it's a different generation, but had you been living in a home during the 1960-70's you most certainly would have. :) Grey seems to be en-trend colour at present, but it is changing, thank heavens, it's so depressing. Oh there is a right size for dolls, I have just bought one. :)

    2. Oh yeah, some of the places I've lived in had propably already been renovated for the second time when I moved in. :D I like some colour, definitely not liking all white or just grey. Oooo will you photograph your chair with some of your dolls, it is interesting to see which size doll it fits. It'd be great if you could do that please. ^__^
      Hugs hugs <3 ^-^
