The Arrival of DD Garnet

Well the funny curly headed Dolly Dingle doll arrived today, and what a peculiar little doll she is. I soon stripped her of her clothes, bow and hairpiece to find her body in good nick.

She came with her shoes and stand. The top layer of her dress is sheer and the underskirt satin.

She really was in great condition and her clothes were like new, but I couldn't quite get over her face. It's the funniest face I have ever seen on a doll . . . it looks like someone has sat on it! LOL!

She has great eyes though, very alive and I think with a little styling her hair should be okay. It's a glued on wig and it has this little clump that sticks up at the top, which could pose a problem. However, I'm pretty sure if I do have problems, I could remove the wig completely and give her a new one.

Her undies will need a little attention if I want them to stay up, the elastic in the waistband is completely stuffed, but that's to be expected, elastic doesn't last forever.

Later this week I shall begin making her a new wardrobe of clothes, starting with her underwear.
I hope my Dolly Dingle makes you smile, she does me!

P.S. Below are original illustrations from Pictorial Review, which are what I want to base my DD on.
From left: 1922, 1923, 1924 versions, none of which have a top knot or ponytail on top of her head.

  1. She's arrived home and she is in excellent condition. That's great! Her face is an interesting one. Not only is her face funny, but it is also playful with a hint of mischief. She is ready to live many adventures.
I might be wrong but I think the piece of hair that is sticking up used to be styled in ponytail at the top of her head.

    1. Yes you are right PP, she came with the pony tail on the top of her head, surrounded with the little plait and trimmed with the bow. However, the original Dolly Dingle illustrations didn't have that and I'd like to redo her as close to the original illustrations as possible.

I will edit my post later to show some very early illustrations from Pictorial Review.

  2. Congrats on the new arrival! Now that you mentioned her face, I can see what you mean but I think this just adds to her rather unique charm. I can't wait to see how you tame that wild hair of hers! And her dress looks quite lovely. I adore the colour.

    1. Thanks Alasse. The wig has already been removed . . . tomorrow I'll give it a wash, condition and trim, then see if I can style it the way I want. The dress is a gorgeous colour and quite well made too. I shall probably use it, but it's not right for this doll.

  3. She certainly doesn't look like other dolls, that's for sure Linda, but I do like her. That's not really strange for me, I tend to like the weird and wonderful. LOL! Yes, the little plaited ring of hair went round her ponytail/top knot. I want her hair to look smooth on top with just a little curl at the ends, so I will probably have to cut it or find a replacement wig. Just have to see how it turns out after the spa.

  4. Well, I was going to say that she was modeled after a Googly, but Linda beat me to it! Can't wait to see what you do to her!

    1. This was a doll that I chose because of her name and her child like body, rather than her face. Now when I look at her chubby little cheeks and bright eyes, I think there is something special about this doll's face . . . she seems to make everyone smile . . . even my hubby!!

    1. Thanks Niina. I agree with you, there is something quite special about her funny little face. She certainly looks better now that she's been to the spa, being able to see her eyebrows and forehead brings some symmetry to her face. X

  8. Yes she has a funny little face and she does indeed make me smile! I like the ideas you have for styling her, she'll look perfect in those types of outfits. She reminds me of a Cupie doll...with more hair.
I look forward to seeing what you do with her, she will be so cute to sew for and photograph.
    Big hugs xxx

    1. Thanks Sharon. Yes I see the resemblance too, but with a LOT more hair, which has been taken care of now, thank heavens! She's sitting on my computer desk at the moment, while I am conjouring up outfits in my mind . . . I think you're right, she will be a whole heap of fun to play with!

  9. I've never seen a doll like that, but I love her! It's hard not to smile watching her :). Those chubby, rosy cheeks are so cute! The dress is very elegant, the pearl necklace too. Congratulations on her arrival!

    1. I found her by chance, and I am so glad I did. Her original clothing is not really what she should be wearing Chiriann, it's nothing like the way Grace illustrated Dolly Dingle. However, it is well made and will probably suit another doll in my collection. :)
Thank you, I am so pleased you like her.

  10. Gosh I see how much work you put in the wig, she definitely needed something done with that! :) She's a funny girl, I like smiling dolls even tough I mostly have the grumpies or serious ones. ^__^ With them the smiley ones always shine in the shelf and makes me smile too. <3 Hugs. X

    1. Thank you, it wasn't too difficult to restyle the wig Xaya, but I did need to cut of quite a bit of the length, it was far too long and just swamped her little face. I know what you mean, I like smiling dolls, though I don't have that many. The definitely do make one smile though.
