Four Little Dresses

I told you I had been hand sewing and the following two photos were taken before the dresses had their press studs sewn on. However, I wanted to see how they would fit different dolls before completing them.

The pattern I used is this one from La Boutique de Vaniline, but I lengthened the skirt and changed the neckline slightly on a couple of them. Her 32-33cm patterns are designed to fit Corolle Les Chéries, Dianna Effner Little Darlings, Sylvia Natterer Minouches, Paola Reina Las Amigas.

Here are the dresses are worn (L to R) by my Phyn & Aero Patience, Corolle Les Chéries, Tonner Betsy McCall and Paola Reina Las Amigas dolls. The dress is slightly big on Patience as her torso is thinner, but she can get away with it.

As I have quite a few different doll this size I wanted to be able to swap their clothes around when it came to dressing them, but still keep all the clothes together in one box. I have some clothes meant for this size doll that cannot be worn by them all, and that annoys me, so they will have to go.

Knitwear can also be switched, however, shoes can not. Just look at the difference in the size of the dolls feet, especially in the first photo. It's laughable! It really is such a shame doll makers don't make all dolls this size have the same size feet!

Here are the same dresses (L to R) on my Vestida de Azul Paulina, Minouche, Little Darling and IpleHouse KID Irene. If Paulina was going to wear this dress, I would need to make one just for her with only one centre set of buttons, as the front of her chest is wider. The fit on my KID is similar to Patience, so once again, she could get away with it.

Here are the completed dresses worn by the girls they were intended for. Lucy (Manica) in the white and Barbara in the dusty pink. I'm not sure about the bright pink buttons on Lucy's dress, I think I may change them to white and I'd prefer a more appropriate pink ribbon in her hair, similar to the pink braid on her dress.

And here we have Carolina and Nora in the more subtle vintage colours. I'm going to change the ribbon in Carolina's hair to a deeper and more olive ribbon and perhaps add matching green braid above the lace (if I can find some) as I have on Nora's dress . . . what do you think?

Well time has flown by and still without an end in sight to this current lockdown. I do hope those of you in the northern hemisphere are making the most of your sunshine and freedom.

FOR BARB: Here's a comparison between my Little Darling's foot and Tonner Betsy McCall's. As you can see Betsy's foot is just a fraction bigger, but I tried my LD's shoes on Betsy and they went on, but were a tight fit, so they wouldn't go on over socks or stockings.

  1. Wonderful dresses. And I love to see comparisons like that.

    1. Thank you Joanna, I do too. It always helps to see the differences between dolls of similar size.

  2. It's interesting seeing the dresses on the different dolls. It is lovely when dresses will fit more than one doll and these can fit many dolls.
Amazing the difference in feet size, yes it would be good if a universal size was used for dolls feet depending on their height, again being able to share shoes is another great saving or time and money.
    The dresses are lovely.

    1. I really should do this more often, but I get so caught up with the knitting and sewing I forget to compare.
Oh I agree, but it is what it is and I guess we just have to do the best we can to accommodate our dolls idiosyncrasies. 🤣
Thank you so much, big hugs,

  4. Hello!
This was an interesting comparison and I agree with you, the show sizes are just crazy. I am glad that my Narshas and Paola Reina doll have the same size and can wear the same shoes. Even Resinsoul can use these shoes, so it is a win-win.
I love the light blue haired Paola Reina doll. I was looking at her too, while deciding on which one to get. :)
The pattern is cute. Thank you for sharing the link to the shop!
    Big hugs!

    1. Thank you Niina, I'm pleased you found it so. As you know I was going to sell my Narsha, but am having second thoughts now. I should try these clothes on her too.
Oh she's so pretty, and her hair is gorgeous, you'll love her Niina. You're welcome, she has some great patterns for this size doll.

  5. The dresses all turned out so lovely! It's nice that you have several dolls that can raid the other dolls' closets! :) I had forgotten that you had a Betsy McCall. Can she and your Little Darling share shoes? I was looking for shoes for my Jane, and a seller has shoes that she says will fit both Betsy and the Little Darlings.

I'm hand sewing a dress myself at the moment, but for an 11cm doll. I'm going cross-eyed trying to sew such a small item.

    1. Thanks Barb. Yes, I have quite a few different dolls this size but it's taken a little while to sort out the clothes thing. 😊 I have posted a photo for you at the bottom of this post so you can see the feet side by side, I hope it helps you.

Oh that's tiny, no wonder you are having trouble, do you have a magnifying glass? I find the type with a light a great help when I'm sewing for teeny weeny dolls.

    2. Thank you for the information on the feet sizes, Xanadu! Jane is the first doll that I've bought in that size range, so I'm going to need to learn about what kind of shoes that she can wear.

I do have a magnifying glass that I'll have to get out. Don't have one with a light yet, but maybe that should go on my to-buy-sometime list.

    3. You're welcome Barb, I like to help whenever I can. Jane is a doll that I think is the perfect size, not too big that she takes up too much room, and not too small that you need that magnifying glass to make clothes for. I find as I get older I need more light to see when sewing, of course you're not as old as me, but I think you would probably find one handy.

  6. Those are some lovely dresses! I always like to see comparisons between different dolls, or trying out clothes from different brands. Sometimes if you have trouble finding outfits for one particular doll, there's another one whose clothes will fit.

Hopefully, lockdown will end soon for you and will be able to go out. In the meantime, it's nice to see that you're keeping yourself busy sewing and taking doll pics.

    1. Thanks MC. I have had the fabrics for ages just waiting for the right dolls to dress. Me too. Most of the time I prefer to make my own doll clothes, but if I see something that catches my eye or is in a fabric that I cannot purchase here I'll buy it.

Not according to today's news, they are waiting until 70% have at least one jab before it even looks like easing even a little. But I am trying to keep occupied.

  7. They are lovely! Black buttons or old rose buttons on Lucy's dress would probably look more in tone than the bright pink ones, but those are nice as well. And maybe a beige hairband for Nora? I fully agree on the topic of doll feet. Why on earth do doll makers produce such a variety of foot sizes without the shoes to go with them? Oh..freedom and sunshine- I wish.

    1. Thank Mia. I haven't any rose otherwise I would have used them. You wouldn't think there was so many different pinks!! I am happy with Nora's hair ribbon but not Caroline's green, but beige would look good on her. Yeah, and lots of different styles of shoes too! Are you in the same boat as us?

    2. You mean lock down? Not exactly, but no sunshine in sight. It has been raining non-stop for weeks, and we still all wear masks and need to show test results or vaccination proof everywhere. But it's the weather that really gets to me. But I shouldn't complain, at least my home is dry.

    3. Oh I do feel for you Mia, I hate those sort of days, they are so depressing. Just keep playing with your dolls, I find it keeps my mind off the things that make me feel down.

  8. Oh my, such a lovely dresses! Your girls look so sweet in them, gorgeous little ladies indeed :)! I love the patterns and laces too. It is really impossible to say, who looks best ;).
Our summer ended suddenly in the middle of August and now, well... outside the window it looks like rainy, cloudy, windy November (we even have the saying, that someone/something is ugly like a November night ;))

    1. Thank you so much Chiriann, I enjoyed making them but I'd really like to get my hands on some more of that French lace.
We have had two lovely days of warm afternoon sunshine, but rain is on it's way for the weekend. I think September is an unpredictable month weather-wise in both hemispheres, but here's to us both seeing more sunny days with temperatures that suit us. 😘

  9. I've commented a couple of times but for some reason it wouldn't accept it, I think it was the browser I was using. I love the dresses, they are so pretty, and it is always good when they fit other dolls. As for the shoes and size of feet, I know exactly what you mean, it can be so frustrating trying to find footwear that fit them all!

    1. That's a bummer Lorraine, sometimes Blogger plays up too, so it could be either. Thank you, yes and I think I am lucky in that most of my dolls are around this size. I think there is a great opportunity there for someone who likes making shoes to open up a dolly shoe shop. 🤣 Wouldn't that be nice?

  10. Thank you Linda. It is a great pattern and so versatile, I do plan on making more clothes using another of her patterns. I'm trying to recall which of the VdA's you bought, I have a couple of them too, I should check to see if we have the same doll, because mine have shoes. Yes and I am getting really annoyed with those that are eligible for vaccine that are not getting it...they are a pain in the butt to say it nicely.😡

  12. I love the dresses. All of them are so pretty, and it is so nice when they can fit more than one little girl. I agree that it would be very nice and much less expensive if the feet for each doll of the same size were the same.

    1. Thank you Dorian. It was time I made them something different to wear, I get a little bored looking at them in the same old clothes. If only they were, it would save our sanity and storage space too!

  13. Hi Sandi!

All the girls look adorable and sweet in those beautiful dresses. It's great when clothes can fit to different dolls. I see it's completly different for their feet, it's very annoying and specially if their shoe size is "special".

    Greetings ^-ᴥ-^

    1. Thank you Sionnach (still can't get used to your new name). Shoe size for dolls is a big problem for us all, as long as we collect different dolls, I'm afraid it will never change.
