I know some of you already use a ring light to take photos with your phones, but I was wondering if anyone uses a Neewer RF550D Macro LED Ring Flash on their DSLR cameras?

Finding many of the Macro LED Rings were really expensive, some even more than what I paid for my Canon. I looked at quite a few reviews before I read this recommendation.

"If you're working to a very limited budget and simply need a ring flash that works, we'd recommend looking at the Neewer RF550D Ring Flash. While it doesn't have anywhere near the level of functionality of other ringflashes on this list, it is incredibly cheap and gives you the basics of what you need to start shooting macro. Compatible with Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras with macro lenses attached, it can be used as a flash or continuous light, with manual and auto modes available. The build feels plasticky and cheap, though that's mostly because it is, but the flash itself works pretty well, and provides a tidy amount of illumination where you need it."

So I looked for one to see exactly what it was and this is what I found:

Description: This RF- 550D Macro LED RingFlash is specially designed to use in the field of macroshot, scientific research, medical and personal photography in very close distance shooting. It can provide continuous and stable semi light or full light to meet higher photograph needs. The device fits any model of NIKON or Canon brand DSLR.

Package Contents: 1 x Macro ring head
1 x Power control with LCD display
8 x Adapter rings (49mm, 52mm 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm)
4 x Flash diffusers (amber, blue, oyster white and transparent).

I was drawn to the "personal photography in very close distance shooting", as I thought it described exactly what we do when we photograph our dolls. I wasn't too fussed about "it feeling plasticky and cheap", I was happy that "the flash itself works pretty well, and provides a tidy amount of illumination where you need it".

I also thought the diffusers could be fun to use. The price was definitely affordable and it was readily available at a number of online stores. So for AU$51.99 including free delivery, I chose to order mine from Amazon and it should be here on 4th September.

When it arrives I'll take some photos with it and share my thoughts on how effective it is. In the meantime, if you have used one, I'd love to hear your review.

  1. Hi Xanadu! I do use a ring light, but it's one that stands on it's own. When I got it I noticed that my photos looked better. I don't know much about photography, but I do thing that good lightning is very important. The advantage that I see with that ring you showed is that you can take it anywhere and you don't have an obstacle between you and what you're trying to photograph. I would like to hear your thoughts on it once you receive it.

    1. Hi MC!
I have seen those on stands, but the descriptions always made me think they were for use with a phone's camera ... like for taking selfies or makimg youtube videos. I think this one is more versatile and would make taking photos easier and quicker as there's no real setting up needed. I will let you know how well it does as soon as I have had a chance to use it.

  2. Hi Sandi!
I have a cheap ring light which has a support for the phone, is that one that make you think that are for use with a phone camera for taking selfies or making videos. I have recently used it to improve the lighting and used my DSLR camera in another tripod for photographing a small acction figure and the result is amazing, so sure this one works very fine. The advantage you have with this ring is that you don't have to deal with a tripod and a cable.
    Greetings ^-ᴥ-^

    1. Hi There!
By the looks of how sharp your photos are I thought you used something similar. I have lighting but I find it a real pain having to set everything up and positioning the lights in the right place ... I have very little patience when it comes to photography (or waiting for dolls to arrive), so I am hoping this is the answer to my prayers. 😂

  3. I don't have a ring light but over the last few months I have bought some other Neewer pphotography products from Amazon and the quality is always very good for the price.

    1. That's good to hear Rachael. I was wondering as the review was made by a professional and he would be comparing this unit to those that professional photographers use. To him it may feel plasticky, but I may not see it in the same light. After all I am just an amateur photographer at best. LOL!

  4. It certainly does Linda and I agree with you regarding the difusers, they could create some unusual shots, especially the blue one. Just think of the possibilities for shooting scenes inside The White Panther Jazz Club or creating night time effects.

  5. I will be very interested in your opinion. I have wanted to get something like this for a long time. (Not that I have time for photographing my dolls now but at some point I will be back into it!) I usually struggle with ordinary desk lamps to light my pictures!

    1. Hi Sam! I know what you mean about desk lamps, it is a real pain in the butt and I will let you know how it all works soon. It's good to hear from you and I hope things are on the improve, we do miss your posts.

  6. I'm looking forward to hearing how this works out for you. I have been looking at inexpensive tabletop ring lights too!

    1. Hi Barb,
Do you use your phone or a DSLR to take your photos? If you use a DSLR, this would be an easier solution as it simply attaches to the DSLR and you wouldn't need to set things up. Unless of course if you want to use your ring light for both. Will let you know how it goes. 😊

    2. I don't use either of those! I have a digital automatic camera that I generally use. When I take pictures for Instagram, I use my tablet. I only use my phone for shots when I'm not at home.

    3. That's all too complicated for me Barb! 🤣 I like using the same camera for everything, then I only have one simple learning curve to worry about. But if that's what works for you, then that's great mate. 😊

  7. Hello! Natural light is really the best, but at time you do not have the time or the place for that. I do not own a ring light, but have been thinking about it. Have seen a few that even use it during a meeting on Zoom, Facetime or similar. I do as Sam, struggle with a desk light. And the struggle is real. Will be fun to see what you think after you have tested the lights.
    Hugs!
