Project: Diorama for Mia Mary

For some time now, Mia Mary (Liz Frost's 14" Mia) has been wanting of a room of her own. So it was up to me to provide one for her . . . we can't have unhappy dolls living in this house. :) The diorama is the largest I have done so far . . . measuring 80cm/31.5" wide x 50cm/19.75" deep x 50cm/19.75" high.

This chair, footstool and table was purchased as a raw flat-pack from Le Quak on Etsy, then I assembled, painted and upholstered it all myself.

As this was a bedroom, Mia needed an outfit to sleep in and so I knitted her a set of baby doll pyjamas. They were designed by Jacqueline Gibb of Jacknitss and the pattern is available on Ravelry.

Hubby had made and painted a bed for her some time ago, but I only finished the duvet (using the same fabric as the upholstered chair) just recently. BTW do you remember me showing you these fabrics? Then I made cushions and knitted the throw to co-ordinate.

Had I known when hubby made the bed, that I was going to paint the chair this pretty Spring White (which is really a very pale shade of aqua), I would have told him not to paint it, so all her furniture would be the same colour. But I guess the white bed doesn't look too much out of place, seeing that the pot that the plant is in, is also white.

The fireplace, which you have seen before, also has the mantel painted Spring White. The blue wall and green flooring is fabric stuck to foam-core board. However, I am thinking of re-doing the floor with wood planks and adding a rug to give the room more texture.

I also need to do something about providing a window for her to look out and finish her standard lamp which I am currently working on. The little tea-set is miniature bone china by Wedgwood.

Well that's it for today. Hope your weekend is happy and creative!
Big hugs,

  1. That looks great!
I keep coming up with plans to make plywood doll furniture, but I never seem to get around to it. But that little bed in particular is making me start plotting again

    1. Thanks Rachael, I am thrilled you think so. I have really been enjoying making these little doll rooms, as well as all the pieces of furniture and soft furnishings which complete them.

The bed is quite a simple piece of furniture to make, so I think you will have very little trouble in designing and making one of your own.
      Good luck and big hugs,

  2. What a cozy room! I love making dioramas, but I just don't have space to keep very many up permanently. Your knitting is beautiful, too.

    1. Hi Barb! Thank you, me too, it's like interior decorating on a small scale. :) Mine all fold down and can be stored in a large plastic container, like the ones you can put under a bed, but it took me quite a while to find one that was the right size. You are so kind, I enjoy knitting, especially in the cold weather.

  3. This is lovely Sandy, and so is Mia Mary, she has the sweetest face. I like the colour scheme you've chosen too, it's quite calming and relaxing :)
I would love to make dioramas for my dolls but not sure where I'd be able to display them these days!!
    Big hugs to you xxx

    1. Thank you so much Sharon, I thought it was time for a change of decor colours and used the floral fabric for inspiration on this one. I don't keep them up all the time, they all store flat and the props also have a box of their own.

I only have one up on my gate-leg table at present, the nightclub, but that's because I am still working on it. I have been making pillars of gold to co-ordinate with the midnight blue "wallpaper".

    1. Thank you Chiriann. Liz does such wonderful dolls, they are my favourites of all my BJD's. The tea set is one of two really good sets I have, the other one is a Beatrix Potter set, which my larger dolls use.

    1. Thank you Joanna. Most times we naturally think of girl doll rooms being pink, well at least I do, but I wanted this room to be more calm and relaxing and I think these colours are perfect. I would also like to do a lilac or lavender room later, but perhaps not as a bedroom, maybe a sunroom or reading room...but it will have to wait till I have finished what I am currently working on. :)

  6. All the pieces go well together and look beautiful. I like all the little touches and the fabric is lovely and goes well with the overall theme of the diorama. Great job!

    1. Thanks Alasse, I'm really pleased you think so. I am happy with the furniture and the combination of colours, but not the floor. (As always, I was impatient to see the room completed with the furniture.) I am re-doing it with timber now, but also have other things on the go too.

    1. Thank you Mia, coming from the master of dioramas, your comment makes me very happy. Liz named her Mia, but it went nicely with Mary and I thought Mary Mary sounded a bit weird even though she is quite contrary. :)
Just watch out she doesn't come over and start planting silver bells and cockleshells in your garden! LOL!

    2. I guess they wouldn't survive the winters over here. I feel very honored that you like my dioramas - although mine are not as stylish as your's.

  8. To be honest, I don't see the color difference that you mention. Do you work on several projects at the same time or do you wait until you finish one to start the next one?
    Take care.

    1. Hi MC, it's probably hard to see, but there is a difference, maybe our screen settings are different. :) I tend to work on several at the same time, that way I don't get bored, but it also means some don't get finished. LOL!
      You too! Big hugs,
