Project: Doll Knitting

After receiving my recent play doll (Paola Reina Las Amigas Nora) who I have renamed Naomi, I set about removing the Velcro closure (my pet hate) on her dress and replacing it with press studs (snaps), then changing the over-sized yellow rose at the front to a more petite cream rose.

Next on my agenda was to make her a cardigan to wear for the cooler autumn days. I knitted Naomi's in a 4 ply synthetic yarn (a remnant, which I cannot remember the name of), but the other two were knitted in Naturally Loyal Baby Prints which gives a lovely fairisle look to the cardigan, without the complication of working with several yarns at the same time.

I really enjoyed making these garments and recorded exactly what I was doing as I progressed, so I could share the pattern with the knitters among you. If you click on the pattern below and open the link in a new window, you should be able to save it to your own computer, then print out later on an A4 page.

If there's anything you don't understand, please ask, and should you make this cardigan for your dolls, please share pictures on your own blogs, I would love to see them :)

  1. Thank you for the pattern! So this cardigan is knit flat? Try as I might, I haven't successfully started a project in the round yet. I could try this, if I have a doll of similar size. Your sweaters look lovely.

Fair Isle sweaters were in style up here this past winter, which meant I got to explain to my husband and my daughter what Fair Isle meant. Me: I want a Fair Isle sweater for Christmas. DH and DD: blank looks. During the 80s you had to have at least one Fair Isle sweater to be a proper preppy, preferably more. :)

    1. You are most welcome Barb. Yes, top to bottom and it's so easy to do on a single set of needles throughout. I am not particularly fond of knitting in the round, so I always design patterns this way. It should also fit other 14" dolls like Corolle Les Cheries and Minouch. If I have time tomorrow I will try the cardigans on a few of my other dolls and photograph them so you can see who & how they fit.

I love fairisle, I had many cardigans and sweaters which my mother knitted for me when I was a child. Unfortunately I don't have the temperament to knit it and prefer the simplicity of these new modern creative yarns.

Hope you have fun knitting, let me know if you need my help. :)

  2. Hey cool, i was fixing to make a post about a knitting project myself...but i can't at the moment because my knitting needles were broken in the mail (GRRR!!!). I love the soft colors that your cardigans were knitted in. And that doll's eyes are to die for. I'd like to see more of your knitted stuff in the future, if you have the time!

    1. Hi RM, that's great news! Pity about the needles though, hopefully you can purchase some more soon. Thank you, I love these pretty yarns and they do suit little girl dolls so well. Naomi thanks you. :) I'll see what I can do, but I do have a few UFP's to finish at present.

    1. Thank you Lenka. That's a shame, but I understand how poor eyesight can effect one's ability to do things, my eyes are not what they used to be either. Take care and stay safe.

  8. Adorable knitted cardigans and thank you for the pattern. Maybe one day I can try this. So far I can handle crocheting due to my broken humerus. Knitting takes more movement for me and poor arm can not handle it. :D
    Hugs!

    1. Thank you Niina, you are most welcome. I hope you can, it will be easier to attempt knitting once you are all mended and able to move freely. Hopefully that is not too far away. :)

  9. Hi Xanadu! Your new doll is really beautiful, the name Naomi really suits her. The cardigans are very cute, love the pastel colors. I don't knit, but there're lots of knitters out there that will love your pattern.

    Take care.

    1. Thank you MC, according to my research the name Naomi is of Hebrew origin and means "beautiful or gentle", so I agree it really suits her.
There doesn't appear to be as many people knitting today, but there is an opportunity to learn something new while we have the current restrictions, so I am hopeful the pattern will come in handy for someone. :)

  13. Thank you so much for the pattern Sandi, I don't know if I'll be able to knit it but I might give it a try....knitting is not my forte LOL!
I love the little cardigans you've finished, they're so pretty. And so is Naomi. I have been looking at my one and only Paola Reina girl this week with a view to customising her a little. I found a person's photos on Instagram and her work is just AMAZING that it's sort of inspired me.
    Big hugs Sharon xxx

    1. You are most welcome Sharon. I hope you will post photos when you finish along with the results of your customising. :)

The yarn is lovely and knits up differently every time I knit a cardi. I finished a dress to match the blue one and I have just finished making a skirt which I will post shortly. I haven't had a computer for two days and when I got it back today, my router went haywire and I had no wireless service.
